Whether you drive a lot or a little, as you age, you have to face the fact that there are a few issues that take on more relevance when it comes to cars.
Here are some of the factors that older drivers might want to consider when shopping for a car, according to Kelley Blue Book’s Russ Heaps:
- Accessibility: A vehicle that’s easy to get in and out of.
- Visibility: You want to see and be seen. A car that sits higher and has ample windows and good headlights is a start.
- Comfort: Consider a power adjustable seat, adjustable steering wheel, and heated and/or cooling seats.
- Low maintenance costs and fuel economy: Value counts, especially for retirees.
- Safety: All of the new cars on KBB’s list of best cars for seniors earned a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
KBB’s top new car picks for older drivers are based on the best combination of features, fuel economy, safety and reliability for the money.
The lowest-priced car on KBB’s list is the 2025 Honda HR-V, ranking No. 8 and starting at $26,795.
As for electric cars, KBB recommends the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5, which ranks No. 9 on the list and starts at $43,975.
