How to Complete Form SSA-44 to Appeal IRMAA
Amy Shepard walks through the SSA-44 form to appeal higher Medicare premiums in the case that a life-altering event has drastically affected your income. If you have received an Initial Determination letter from Social Security, that means you may be subject to higher Medicare premiums based on your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) from 2 years prior. However, receiving the Initial Determination letter does not mean you HAVE to pay higher Medicare premiums – there is an appeal process that has the potential to waive the higher costs for those who have experienced certain life-changing events that resulted in reduced income. In this video, Amy walks through the IRMAA appeal form – the formal name is Form SSA-44: Medicare Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount – Life-Changing Event. The link to download the form online can be found here. If you’ve looked at the form, watched the video, and still don’t feel confident in how to fill it out there is another option! You can contact Social Security using the phone number on the form and schedule an appointment to file your IRMAA appeal in person and they can help you through the process. The website to find a local Social Security office is available here.
