Medicare ANOC Checklist: What Changed for 2027 | FinStream

Medicare ANOC Checklist: What Changed in Your Plan for 2027?

Intro

Every fall, Medicare Advantage and Part D plans send members a letter most people set aside: the Annual Notice of Change, or ANOC. It is the single most important piece of mail your plan sends all year — because it spells out exactly what changes on January 1, and whether the plan that fit you this year still fits you next year.

You do not have to switch plans. But you do have to check. Premiums, deductibles, drug coverage, doctor networks, and extra benefits can all change from one year to the next, even if you stay with the same insurer.

Key dates: Medicare Annual Enrollment runs October 15 – December 7, 2026. Any change you make during that window takes effect January 1, 2027. If you do nothing, your current plan usually renews — with next year’s terms, not this year’s.

What is an ANOC?

Your ANOC is your plan’s notice, sent in the fall, listing what will be different next year: costs, covered drugs, provider networks, and benefits. It applies to Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D drug plans. If you did not receive one, contact your plan and ask for a copy — and keep it beside you while you compare options.

A separate notice matters too: if your plan is leaving your area or ending, that arrives as a plan non-renewal / termination notice, which can open its own enrollment window outside the usual dates.

The 5-point ANOC checklist

1. Premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket limits Check the new monthly premium, any deductible you pay before coverage begins, copays for doctor and specialist visits, and the plan’s maximum out-of-pocket amount. A small premium rise can still add up over 12 months — and a higher out-of-pocket limit changes your worst-case year.

2. Prescription drugs and your pharmacy Confirm every medication you take is still covered, at the tier and cost you expect, and that your preferred pharmacy is still in the plan’s network. Watch for drugs that moved to a higher tier, gained a prior-authorization requirement, or left the formulary altogether. This section alone is a common reason people switch.

3. Doctors, hospitals, and specialists Confirm your primary care doctor, specialists, and preferred hospital are still in-network for 2027 — for that specific plan, not just that insurer. Networks change every year, and an out-of-network doctor is one of the most expensive surprises in Medicare.

4. Extra benefits Review dental, vision, hearing, and over-the-counter allowances. Benefits are added, reduced, or removed year to year, plan to plan — do not assume last year’s extras carry over.

5. The plan itself Check the plan’s star rating and whether anything in the ANOC signals a bigger change — a service-area change, a benefit restructuring, or a non-renewal notice. If several checklist items moved against you at once, that is the signal to compare other plans rather than auto-renew.

What to do next

  1. Find your ANOC and work through the five points above.
  2. List your current prescriptions, dosages, and preferred pharmacy.
  3. Compare plans side by side on Medicare.gov’s Plan Finder, or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
  4. For free, unbiased help, contact your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) counselor.
  5. Decide before December 7, 2026 — after that, the window closes (a separate, more limited Medicare Advantage open enrollment period runs January 1 – March 31).

FAQs

  • What is a Medicare ANOC? — Your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan’s fall notice of what changes next year: costs, drug coverage, networks, and benefits.
  • When did I get my ANOC? — Plans send it in the fall, ahead of the October 15 – December 7 enrollment period.
  • Do I have to change plans? — No. If your ANOC shows nothing material changed and your doctors, drugs, and costs still fit, staying put is a valid choice.
  • What if my doctor is no longer in-network? — That is a strong reason to compare plans during enrollment, before the December 7 deadline.
  • What if my drug moved to a higher tier? — Check the new cost, whether an alternative is covered, and compare total estimated costs across plans on Medicare.gov — not just the premium.
